Abhayam's Nukkad Naatak on Lesbian Visibility Day, 2022: 'Kuch Kuch Hota Hai!'

Updated: Aug 7, 2022

"Love is not a phase, nor it is a trend, it is an inborn feeling that is boundless and cannot be explicated"

Taking this idea forward, a Nukkad Naatak titled, 'Kuch Kuch Hota Hai' was organized by the Centre For Gender Empowerment, Abhayam, on the occasion of Lesbian Visibility Day.

The day is celebrated on the 26th of April every year since 2008, to recognize, celebrate and support the lesbian community. It provides lesbians across the globe to celebrate their identity and seek help and guidance from those who have overcome similar challenges in life. The purpose behind celebrating the day is to elevate and honor the unique community of people who are historically overlooked and dismissed by way of being both women and queer and also to bring awareness about the stereotypes, judgment, and lack of representation that happens daily.

The street play was organized to address the stigma attached to the LGBTQIA+ community and to elevate their status of recognition. The play was a take on the iconic film 'Kuch Kuch Hota Hai' from a queer lens where the popular love story of Anjali and Rahul which is ruling the Indian cinema for years was twisted. The romantic chemistry between Tina and Anjali was presented which faced strong opposition and humiliation from society as well as Rahul. It was an attempt to create awareness about the community.

Immense zeal and active participation were displayed by students in the event. There was a heartening and overwhelming response from the audience and the participants received a massive round of applause for their performance.
